When Do Doctors Recommend an EKG?
Physicians may order an EKG if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Unexplained and/or sudden chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Pounding or irregular heartbeat
- Fatigue
An electrocardiogram is an effective testing method that helps doctors analyze your heart health in a wide variety of
situations. If you take medication for your cardiovascular health, your doctor may recommend regular EKGs to monitor
the effectiveness of your treatment plan. If you have an internal mechanical device to support your heart function,
EKGs also help monitor the implant is working properly.
Your doctor can prescribe routine EKGs if you have a heart condition or are at high risk of developing one. You may
also need an EKG as part of your pre-operative testing to ensure that surgery is safe for your heart.
What to Expect During Your EKG Test
An EKG requires no specific preparation, and we can perform it as part of any appointment thanks to our on-site
equipment. EKG tests are safe for everyone.
During the test, you need to lie down on an examination table or bed. You need to remove any jewelry you are wearing.
We can ask you to pull up, open, or remove clothing items where we need to place electrodes on your skin such as
your chest, legs, and arms. A standard EKG requires 10 to 12 electrodes. Our staff member then connects the
electrodes to the electrocardiograph machine to begin the test.
At certain times we may ask you to hold your breath and you should avoid talking during the EKG. The test usually
lasts 10 minutes.
Our doctor then reviews your EKG results and looks for the following:
- Any sign of heart damage or disease
- Arrhythmias such as irregular, fast, or slow heartbeat
- Heart defects
- Issues with the valves or walls of the heart
Once we have reviewed your results, we let you know what they mean, including whether you need to see a specialist or
require a modification to your current prescription medication. We strive to support you enjoy a healthy heart with
any additional testing or treatment you need.
